I was in a heavily Amish community a few years back looking for a hay baler in a farm equipment dealership. The dealer told me that the Amish there wouldn’t dare OWN mechanical equipment but they sure didn’t mind borrowing someone else’s!

When I was a kid we visited a great uncle in Indiana. They were on a farm and the neighbor was Amish. He would borrow the tractor for some night time harvesting.

A good friend of mine is former Amish who became a born-again Christian. We’ve had a couple interesting conversations.

I often meet Amish framers on construction sites. Three Amish and a long haired guy in a Megadeath T-Shirt is the norm. The Amish builder owns the truck. Mr. Megadeth drives it.

They have the best tools around. Some are craftsmen and others are hacks.

I was talking to one of them once and his pocket phone rang. It was a traditional cordless land line phone. When I asked he told me that they had a land line in a shack 100’ from the house. It transferred the land line to a cell signal but since they weren’t allowed to have cell phones, it transferred back to a battery powered land line phone in their job trailer.

Just another way they skirt the rules.
