Because the Whigs became republicans for the most part.
We could be at a similar crossroad. Many repubs recognize the strength of the MAGA coalition and that the voters are Trump voters.
If Donald Trump himself started a “MAGA” Party, his voters would go with him, so it stands to reason, would a number of office holders who know that their voters are his voters.
