Modern art is a matter of taste, some acquired, some innate.

I really like modern art but I understand when other folks don't get it.

People high in what Jordan Peterson calls "trait openness" tend to like modern art. Folks low in "trait openness" don't.

Many “modern art” fans look down on other art.

I agree with you. Some modern art is quite good. Robert Hughes wrote a book that became a PBS documentary called "The Shock of the New" where he tried to separate the wheat from the chaff in modern art. I think he did a really good job and I agreed with most of his choices.

He later became really disheartened by how the modern art market became more about financial appreciation than art appreciation and made another documentary on that.
