I knew a guy who worked on those boats in Alaska - his teeth were ruined from the drugs. He got off all the drugs except nicotine - said that was the most difficult to quit.

I worked on a small albacore boat out of San Pedro, Cal in the summer of ‘65. Every other word we used was ‘foul language’. Had to learn to shut it off when ashore.

One time when we had just come in after unloading our catch at the cannery, a young guy with his girlfriend we walking along the dock we were tied up to and asked how we had done. I had let loose at least four or five ‘bad words’ in front a young lady before I realized that although still aboard the boat, I was back in civilization. It was embarrassing to say the least.
