One thing I noticed about watching some real car bomb explosions from the Middle East is they do not look like movies. There's a flash from the high explosives in the car bomb, followed by windows in the area shattering. There is no big puff of flame and smoke from the primary explosion like if you set off a tank of diesel fuel in the trunk. That comes from buildings or nearby cars catching on fire. My guess is that the thing shooting upwards is from the primary explosion and the plume is from a secondary or a dust cloud.
Just food for thought. I just think its unusual and I saw many many car bombs in Iraq.
