Wikipedia says he died yesterday, but didn't say what happened.
When all the kids were going to watch Zepplin and Kiss I was at bluegrass shows in WV and Ky.

Saw him many times when he was with the David Grisman Quintet in the late 70’s, incredible picker and he made it look so easy.

RIP.
When I was a youngster a lady who worked for the city, and whose brother was my best friend, asked us who would be a good group to book to perform at an outdoor event. We were big bluegrass fans and musicians ourselves so without hesitation we said Tony Rice. She booked his group.
It was fantastic! His brother was with the group as well. The lightning accuracy of the notes and the recording studio precise vocals was spellbounding. It was just unbelievably awesome!
At the end of the show our city organizer friend handed Tony a check that had been prepared beforehand for their performance and he told her they could only accept cash.
Since it was a Saturday and the banks were closed, my city friend asked us boys if we would head over to the grocery store where my father in-law was the manager and see if he would cash the check. Luckily he was working that day and he gladly gave us the cash in a brown paper bag. Sack of cash in hand...we went back to the event and handed it over to Tony. For us boys.....it was a very memorable day!
God Bless Tony Rice and his family. Thank you Tony for your love of music and sharing that love with us.
Still processing this song. Love the way the bassist taps the body of the bass on the upbeats. She’s basically doing a snare hit on the bass. Those vocal harmonies are intense.
