Because it is our way. A proud tradition handed down from generation to generation.
My personal conclusion after careful ponderance of the evidence is that it was a direct hit by a piece of space dust from an extinct comet. That stuff travels through space at enormous speed, you know. So it doesn't take much to cause that much devastation.
Or, it could've been a backfire from the RV. Those things have enormous diesel engines, I hear.
