"i do run a VPN on my windows os- but not on my linux one- not sure how on linux"
Some VPNs provide clients for Linux, but there are various ways to configure Linux to work with VPNs without the clients provided by VPNs (Network Manager, command line interface in a terminal, etc.). Use a search engine to find tutorials, wikis and the like. If you want to use Wireguard instead of OpenVPN, though, you'll need a new enough Linux kernel. OpenVPN works fast enough, if you're not trying to install and use it in a tiny router with a slow CPU.
