Shortly after they did this, Madalyn Murray O'Hair threatened to sue NASA for doing this. From thereon, whenever an astronaut wishes to perform some religious activity, say as to when Buzz Aldrin took Communion shortly after landing in Apollo 11, NASA cuts off the communication feed.
Ironically, the erstwhile 'Godless Communists" in the Russian Space program are under no such compunction, even going so far as to having Orthodox priests bless the crews and vehicles and having icons on board the Space Station.
