BTW my 1st trip to Japan and the rest of WestPac was in AUG 1957, in the middle of the ASIAN FLU WORLD PANDEMIC and it was business/life as usual.
One of the first things we were ‘taught’ on the way over was don’t eat the vegetables as they were ferlitized with human waste and our system couldn’t ‘handle’ it.
Discovered real quick that a few Asahis or Tory/Sun Tory would offset any ‘harm’ the veggies (if one got near them) would do.
In Hong Kong ‘Peggy Sue’ would paint the ships for the garbage.
In Subic Bay RPI San Miguel cured and caused many ‘bad’ things...
Definitely don’t recall any masks or social distancing on anyones part...especially ours.
Ship was a WWII style APA (Troop transport) and the Jr enlisted quarters had bunks stacked six high with two lashed to poles and the ‘safety/sanitary’ method of sleeping was head to toe for whatever reason...
Always got a ‘kick’ out of Elaine telling Jerry that just because one slept head to toe in same space still ‘certain parts’ were lined up no matter which method was used.
We brought our dog with us from Japan to the US. On the Hawaii stop, I can still remember the dog howling to get out of his pen on the rear deck of the ship.
US regulations mandated a two week quarantine for overseas pets. The two week trip worked.
