Returning to the critic-confounding solo home recordings of his McCartney series, this album is – some oddities and filler aside – affectingly personal and hugely enjoyable

“The album was met with widespread acclaim from music critics.”
It was released today and yet it already has widespread acclaim from music critics? well ... ok.

My impression of the McCartney stuff in the early years following the break-up of The Beatles was that it was mostly insipid, and I think John Lennon agreed. I lost interest after that.
I don't think that their (The Beatles) music - inventive as it was - has aged well, but it seems obvious to me that Lennon and McCartney were better as a team than as solo performers and writers. They seemed to be a corrective to each other's worst tendencies - McCartney's schmaltz and Lennon's aggressive roughness and nastiness.
I think I might enjoy The Beatles music more if it was in a language I didn't understand. To me, a lot of it is lyrically pretentious.

Music critics usually get advance copies ahead of the release.

Paul McCartney’s music and even the Beatles music bores the living daylights out of me.

The only Beatle who did anything after the breakup that was worth listening to was George.Yes,Paul was wildly popular and John was quite popular but All Things Must Pass and Handle Me With Care were true classics.

Just now tracked through it. Didn’t give it a proper listen.
I’m not fond of the contemporary arrangement/production.
For a one-man solo album he’s doing his best to make it sound like a full band. This is his third in the “series” now (decades apart).
He may have something to say in these lyrics but I’m not hearing it.
Pete Townsend’s full instrument - one man overdubbing himself - demos for Quadrophenia blow this away. It’s a much more personal expression.

00:00 “The Real Me”
04:22 “Cut My Hair”
07:49 “Punk”
12:40 “Dirty Jobs”
16:22 “Is It In My Head?”
20:29 “Anymore”
23:46 “I’ve Had Enough”
30:05 “Drowned”
34:17 “Is It Me?”
38:52 “Doctor Jimmy”
46:16 “Love Reign O’er Me”
And McCartney(I) was a good exercise (and a break from the Beatles coming 1970) but was much more pared down (except for Maybe I’m Amazed).

Never was a big Paul fan, I thought is stuff after the split was too teeny bop. But I saw him Coachella a few years ago. Good show.
Also learned the night before the show, he and few of the band members played, unannounced, at a small club in 29 Palms (about 40 miles away). Pretty cool.

George also wrote “It Don’t Come Easy” for Ringo.

Excellent summary. I essentially agree with you, and I don’t really listen to them these days, nor have I for many years, though I did sit through a listen of the album “Magical Mystery Tour” this week & really enjoyed it.
It’s very much an underrated album IMO.
