I believe Putin latched on to Trump in order to break away from derp control. If Trump were to be ousted, he would be in a world of hurt and would be forced to rejoin the old game. Russia cannot stand alone against the combined forces of an American-less derp state.

Some secret communication seemed to be going on between the two of them when Putin gave Trump a soccer ball at one of those summits. Also, Putin tends to be complimentary when he talks about Trump publicly, but then again why wouldn't he?
