My doctorate is in musicology. I expect my students to call me Dr. I don’t expect my neighbors, fellow congregants, or anyone else to.
Obtaining an academic doctorate is no picnic, but outside of academia it doesn’t mean you’re smarter than the average bear.

Exactly how I see it.
My husband is a PhD in Physics — has been called a “national treasure” by some in the defense industry. He NEVER refers to himself as “Doctor” in social, family, etc., situations, and corrects people when they call him that. (During his career in work setting, I don’t know; I never was around.) We had been married two years before my parents knew he was a doctor.
I guess some people like it, and some don’t. It’s a personal thing. When it comes to Jill Biden, it seems like an affectation and she’s longing for approval.
