You picked the numbers. I showed why your reasoning was incorrect.

“And if you are coming from Florida to California in the southern route, (10), the highest you’ll see is 75 around Texas.”

I went that route a few years ago. I think it was 85. On cruise control at 100 getting passed.

“Bout the best I did was still under 50”

I typically average 60+ including all stops unless my wife is with me.

Autobahn style would be really nice in this country, but it would take a lot of driver education, rigorously enforced, before it could work. Picture cruising at 130 in the fast lane, when suddenly some Q-tip pulls in front of you at 70, because someone else is only doing 68. Or better yet, a semi gets into the fast lane because he’s going 65 1/4 and the truck ahead of him is only going 65 1/8.

If traffic flow is 75 mph and someone is puttering along at 50, they create a dangerous situation.

1995 was the year the national 55 mph speed limit law was changed. If you look at the NHTSA statistics between 1995 and 1996 you'll find that road fatalities dropped about 30% between the two years. You'll rarely see it mentioned, and I don't even know if you can find it in the stats today because they're probably covered up. I submit that the reason for the drop in fatalities is because you no longer had a big disparity in speeds. Before 1996 you had half the drivers doing 55 and half doing 75, once the law changed pretty much everyone was doing 75 and traffic flowed much better, you didn't have everyone constantly passing and vying for position. It's not speed that causes accidents, it's vehicles doing different speeds and the conflicts that brings.

The national 55 mph speed limit killed a lot of people unnecessarily.

“I showed why your reasoning was incorrect.”

About the only thing you showed me is that you drive well over the limit. I didn’t figure that in because I have no idea how good a driver you are and if you can handle high speeds. And there are enough bad drivers out there that are already busting the limit that can’t handle the vehicle good enough to do so as it is now.

We were talking about raising the speed limits and I was indicating nothing much was gained and a lot more was lost through trusting people to handle the cars. And you can be sure that not everyone has a USAC license out there so it is not automatically no different with the raising....it will be. And at those speeds, the difference will be body count.

“I didn’t figure that in “.

You presented the numbers. My examples show that that hours can be save using YOUR number comparisons and why driving at your upper number versus your lower number has benefits.

Do you remember when the fed set the 55 limit? I guess not.

Also, you ignored my post about fatalities INCREASED when Wyoming lowered speed limits.

“About the only thing you showed me is that you drive well over the limit.”

Are you a democrat?

“I didn’t figure that in because I have no idea how good a driver you are and if you can handle high speeds.”

I haven’t reset my speed limiter so my car and skills with my car haven’t been fully tested.

Without the limiter my car is good to 190+. At 140 I feel very comfortable depending on traffic and road conditions.

80 in a 75 zone is not well over.

I’m told my new C8 Corvette can do 194 MPH.

It would be fun to give it a try...

Rumor is the upcoming C8 Z06 Model will be able to top out well over 200 MPH.

I test drove a C7 Z06 but it was a nogo. Too low for her an no backseat for the grandkids.

I think my speed limiter is 167 but 145 is my top so far.

Two points here:

1. A five MPH amount over the maximum at those speeds is well over for many who shouldn’t be driving that fast anyway. And I have no idea as to your skills or the people around you.

2. You stated: “I went that route a few years ago. I think it was 85. On cruise control at 100 getting passed.” If the guy next to you jumps off a cliff to get there faster, do you join him? And I think I understand you said you were on Cruise control at 100? That’s 25% more than the max limit Oklahoma is looking at.

The public roadways kill a lot of people each year. And the two biggest reasons are excessive speed and driving impaired. It’s one thing to move with the flow of traffic and another to let the idiot go by you doing it even more above the speed limit that you are. It easily comes down to not who was worse, but that both are wrong. And it may not be because of your abilities to driving but the lack of those around you that lack them that can get you or yours hurt.

I asked a CHP a couple of years ago what he did when all the traffic was flowing 5 to 15 MPH over the limit. His answer, “I get off the road and wait for the cleanup call.”

I bought the C8 Hard Top Convertible Model. It’s a 2LT, Black with Natural Interior.

Finally got it a Month ago after waiting 15 Months for it to show up. Between the UAW Strike and Covid shutting down the Factory for four Months, it’s been a long wait.

People ask me if it’s a Ferrari or a Lambo. Cracks me up.

Had a 1986 C4 Convertible and a 2014 C7 Z51 Coupe before this one. Talk about night and day.

The mid engine platform is simply amazing. Add the European like Interior, the Folding Hard Top with Nacelles with an attainable Price Point and you can’t beat it.

It’s basically the Pantera I could never afford when I was younger and the F8 Ferrari I can’t afford now.

“. A five MPH amount over the maximum at those speeds is well over for many who shouldn’t be driving that fast anyway.”

And well under what many are comfortable with. One is not forced to drive at the max speed limit. Conservatives decide on their on comfort level.

100 on an almost empty interstate is not. jumping off a cliff. If it were legal, I would be safe and comfortable cruising at 140 under those conditions.

It’s called defensive driving. One anticipates the other driver doing the unexpected. One of the reasons I drive a performance car.

Studies show that speed is not a major cause of accidents. Variation in speed results in higher accident rates.
