Sequence captured on bank of Lake Apopka
When it comes to nature in Florida, expect the unexpected.
You never know what you might stumble across, and a sequence of photos showing Great Blue Heron devouring a juvenile alligator proves it.
Danny Gilliam shared photos on his Facebook page on Dec. 6, showing a “large juvenile alligator” being eaten in whole by a Heron on the bank of Lake Apopka.
Honestly, it’s mesmerizing and shocking, and many on social media agreed because his post went viral with more than 71,000 shares as of Tuesday morning.
One might think alligators have the upper hand and can stand up to anything, but the giant bird won this battle.

Dang! I didn’t know they could manage one that big.
Sometimes you are the windshield
Sometimes you are the bug
I have seen birds like this in the park hovering over gopher holes. They must have seen them while flying then landed and waited to strike which is lightning quick.
#7 that is a photo of a bird wishing it was bigger.
>Wouldn’t the “food” be biting and clawing all the way down? And for a while after?
Actually, herons kill prey first by hitting it in the head like a woodpecker. And they do that due to instinctual drive, and will strike again before eating. Some koi keepers can come out and find all their expensive fish floating, looking like they were shot in the skull with a 22.
The alligator swam by the heron, got “shot” in the head, and was stunned or dead and floating when the heron swallowed it.
