I wasn't disagreeing with you. I was demonstrating for others how your point can be true without implying anything about the game being true.
Years ago when I was in prep school, a snotty underclassman who I didn't know was openly maintaining that his father had inside knowledge as to how the games are fixed. It would be the refs (lowest paid of those who influence the outcome, especially at the time [early '80s]). It would only take one ref to call or not call a hold or other low-visibility call at key moments.
The key was that only ONE game per weekend would be "fixed", that would be the game where the spread is "off" by a little bit to get the betting going one way . . . the WRONG way.
Now this was a long time ago, so there are a lot of reasons why things are done differently now, but nothing I have ever seen has made me think the kid's story was implausible.
