Cris Collinsworth is facing backlash for saying he was “blown away” by some women’s knowledge of football during Wednesday afternoon’s broadcast of the Steelers-Ravens game, which aired on NBC.
“Everybody’s a fan, in particular the ladies that I met,” he said during the second quarter. “They had really specific questions about the game and I’m like, ‘Wow.’

Who cares? Collinsworth can’t even say “pass rush” after trying to say it on air for the past 20 years (he says “pash rush”). Not that I’ve watched one minute of the NFL since 2016 anyway...

I’m surprised too when I talk to a woman who knows the difference between a guard and a tackle. But then I’m a sexist homophobic conservative.
I find it hilarious that Australian men call women “Sheila’s”.

That was part of the Madden Effect.
John Madden wasn’t the typical sports broadcaster who spoke in terms only comprehensible to viewers in the know.
In his first book, titled “Hey,I Wrote A Book!” Madden said he went into the broadcasting booth intending to talk to everyone from the housewife (who wondered what their husbands saw in that silly game), the girlfriend hanging out with her boyfriend watching the game, kids just getting into sports.
Madden spoke in easily understandable terms and diagrammed what he was talking about.
The screen full of X’s and O’s with the plays diagrammed for all to see?
That started at the request of Madden because he wanted to direct the viewers attention to explain the game of football.
Football owes quite a bit to John Madden.

Kids used to watch Disney. Saw how they depicted grownups. ESP men. Cut off the channel.
