Our constitution enshrines republicanism, federalism and democracy. Yes, democracy is at the very core of our founding. There is no pure democracy. It is too unwieldy and difficult to manage, as our founders well knew. In fact, many people decry the 17th amendment as implementing TOO MUCH Democracy in place of Republicanism. But yes, we ARE a Democracy, AND a Federal Constitutional Republic. Take away any one of those four and you no longer accurately describe the USA.

No; there is no mention whatsoever of democracy in the US Constitution. None. Not to mention, Article 4 Section 4 stipulates that the states are to be “guarantee(d) … a republican form of government”.
The evils we experience flow from the excess of democracy.

— Elbridge Gerry, Madison Debates

(T)he first step in the revolution by the working class is to raise the proletariat to the level of ruling class to win the battle of democracy.

— Communist Manifesto

What will be the course of this revolution? Above all, it will establish a democratic constitution, and through this, the direct or indirect dominance of the proletariat. […] Democracy would be wholly valueless to the proletariat if it were not immediately used as a means for putting through measures directed against private property and ensuring the livelihood of the proletariat.

— The Principles of Communism
Democracy is the equivalent of mob rule, i.e. tyranny of the majority. That is why the Democratic Party wants it; that is why communists preach it.
