I think we have been a “goner” nation for a whole lot longer than we have realized. And I think it began with the educational system when our kids no longer had music, art, history, logic, advanced math, etc. available to learn. Oh, yes, I forgot writing as in original stories, script, etc.

I had all those things including the capacity to learn to play a musical instrument. My father did not think educating a “girl” was important so I was my mother’s faithful servant. The one area he relented on was learning to shoot a rifle. He was an NRA rifle instructor and he developed a teen rifle team. We shot competitively and were actually very good. I can still outshoot most men I know.

I did have some teachers who knew him including my German teacher who he was supposed to have married (instead he married my Mom). However, the German teacher knew how the land laid, and she made sure I had art, music, more math, etc.

I left home within two weeks of high school graduation, joined the Navy (thank god...was the best decisions of my life and that experience changed my life forever. It enabled me to see me as a human. I will forever be grateful.

Once I started regoing to school (due to the encouragement of my second husband) I ended up with a DVM, PhD and an MSN in Nursing all of which I used in one way or another the rest of my life. My life at 81 is not over, as I still use my experience to promote girls and women to do what they are capable of.

When the big divide occurs and we split as a nation, don’t discourage the women who shoot well or have advanced degrees, who love deeply, think clearly and logically, and who can write. We, too, are capable of wonderful and great things to keep our country free as a republic and a democracy.
