Schwimmer should have received an Emmy for his portrayal of Herbert Schobel. Schwimmer is insufferable as Schobel—as he was meant to play him, I’m sure. But he is the key to binding the audience with the other main characters that go on to their night drop on D-Day.
Sobel, not Schobel
The name was Herbert Sobel.
After the war Sobel returned to Chicago, started a career (can’t remember what in), married and started a family.
Losing Easy company however dogged him until his last breath. He died a divorced and bitter old man whose funeral was attended by only the priest and the gravediggers.
He was often invited to E company reunions but never attended.
Schwimmer was fantastic in the role of Sobel. He pulled it off perfectly.
