The excerpt posted here of the article does not make it clear. It identifies him only as someone's "son." I'm figuring that if he's an unattached male in his 20s, there is nothing holding him back - nothing preventing him from telling his mother, "I've always wanted to work on a farm in N. Dakota!" and leaving.

When I was a young man back in the 1970s, you could become a boarder on the edge of town for $25 / week.

People are always looking to hire guys living in a van down by the river...

In my day, potential employers weren't so choosy. For certain low-wage positions, it was enough if you made a relatively honest impression. Heck, I could have gotten a "gig" bucking bales ("haying") - on a cash basis - any day of the week. Would have sufficed until I got settled.
