There is a lot of deep and rich meaning behind that flag and the phrase. It is from the writings of John Locke that basically says that we get our rights from God, not a King or government. When we are deprived of our rights and have no appeal on earth, we have the liberty make an appeal to heaven. Our Founding Fathers knew his writings well. It would be a good idea for us to learn them too.

I live in New England, and recently had gone on a tour of a colonial house, and the planks on the floor were the widest I had ever seen. The owner of this house was one who was known for deliberately thumbing his nose at the English authorities, and this was just another form of rebellion against the Crown for him.
