Many did as they saw The Lord as the instrument to overturn Rome and when the crowd realized this was not going to be the case they turned on Him.

They turned when he was arrested ?
He was about to be set free.

Not arguing.

They turned during the week (cleansing of the temple, arguments with pharisees and saudducees, judging them as vipers and such, etc...) after they laid the palm branches and their cloaks at His feet just 5 days prior. Their anger and mob rule/mentality (democracy) egged on by the leaders condemmed The Lord.

He was never going to be set free for he had to endure his passion. Easy for us to see as Monday morning quarterbacks now.
