We'd better all hope that Hurricane Maria was just a coincidence, because if the Chinese have the technology to instigate a hurricane to damage the Arecibo dish, the whole world is screwed! Or at least the Caribbean and the SE USA.

Hurricane Maria did not caused the wires to snap. There was some damage from it, but the stuff happen just now, about (correct me) two years after the hurricane. Suddenly wires started to snap. Wires could be sabotaged. It is just my observation, but now China has the monopoly on large radio telescopes.
