Due to this group’s preoccupation with Satan, I always stayed away from buying any of their work. But to each his own.
I think the closest I ever got to this brand of rock was enjoying
“Smoke On The Water” by Deep Purple.
We all came out to Montreux
On the Lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile
We didn’t have much time
Frank Zappa and the Mothers
Were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun
Burned the place to the groundSmoke on the water, a fire in the sky
Smoke on the water
Related
They burned down the gambling house
It died with an awful sound
Funky Claude was running in and out
Pulling kids out the ground
When it all was over
We had to find another place
But Swiss time was running out
It seemed that we would lose the raceSmoke on the water, a fire in the sky
Smoke on the water
We ended up at the Grand Hotel
It was empty, cold and bare
But with the Rolling truck Stones thing just outside
Making our music there
With a few red lights, a few old beds
We made a place to sweat
No matter what we get out of this
I know, I know we’ll never forgetSmoke on the water, a fire in the sky
Smoke on the water
Vast majority of their lyrics are not about Satan, and the ones that are are always in the bad sense, even in the discarded lyrics to “Walpurgis” (which was reworked into “War Pigs”). They got the band name from an old Boris Karloff movie, BTW.
Early 1980s “metal” bands such as Venom and Slayer openly praise the god of this world, by contrast, and their lyrics are quite vile.
