My ancestors homesteaded in Fleming, Saskatchewan. Imaging living in a 10 foot by 10 foot “house” in those conditions. No modern weather sealing, no modern insulation.
Actually, I think they probably lived in that “house” on the homestead during the farming season and retreated to the nearby town in winter.
Mine homesteaded in Halkirk, Alberta and my Great grandpa was the only one to come back this way. The rest of the line died out eventually.

I was born in Battleford, SK. Nothing’s changed weather-wise. There are only 2 types of weather in SK, cold and “effing’ cold.
