Why would there be nearly three dozen election machines be connected to the internet in battleground states?

A good question. Usually secure systems (power plants, voting machines) have no connections to the web to prevent even the remote possibility of someone gaining access.
GA said they were down at one point to get updates to computers. What kind of updates would voting machines do?
