“...and asked Mrs. Persinger what it was.”
And that triggers my memory. As WWII was winding down, the unit known as the Brave Rifles (2nd Armored Cav) had crossed into Austria, where they liberated the Death Camp at Ebensee. The first tank in was commanded by Bob Persinger. I got to talk to him and get his story of that day. Horrible horrible things. My father was commanding another one of the tanks. He had many stories but never spoke of that day.

Much gratitude for your sharing that memory!
My paternal grandfather was a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne in WWII. Although I was a kid and he did not talk about his experience around me, I saw the shrapnel wounds on his legs. Your comment has motivated me to pursue garnering information from my papa - which I should’ve already done.

I cannot relate to the reality of that situation, but there is an episode in the "Band of Brothers" series where they discover one of the Nazi death camps. It is a chilling episode, and really captures the situation well. It's titled "Why We Fight".
