Prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty Monday against former Major League Baseball prospect Brandon Martin in the 2015 triple murder of his father, uncle and a home alarm installer.
Martin, once a top prospect for the Tampa Bay Rays, was convicted in the slayings Wednesday.
He had been on a mental health hold two days before the slayings. The family was installing an alarm system on Sept. 17, 2015 at their Corona, Calif., home after he repeatedly displayed violent behavior toward them.
Prosecutors said Martin used a baseball bat to beat to death his wheelchair-bound father, Michael Martin, uncle Ricky Martin and alarm installer Barry Swanson.
Authorities said Martin had to be forcibly taken into custody the day after the murder when they confronted him.
Hailed as the "next Derek Jeter," the New York Yankees superstar, Tampa Bay made Martin the 38th overall pick in the 2011 draft. His erratic behavior led him to be let go by the team on March 26, 2015, after three years in their farm system.
Authorities said Martin fell into drugs after winning a contract of nearly $1 million from the Rays. He often held parties with large entourages during the season and grew angrier at his father, once punching him in the head.
He had choked his mother and held scissors to her neck in 2015, leading to the mental health hold two days before the slayings, authorities said.
Yup.
For anyone with Legal Training, I have a question:
2015 was when the murdered happened. I think he’s been locked up and awaiting trial since then.
Is a five year wait typical for a triple murderer?
Sounds about right.
A brother of one of my friends was executed in Missouri in 2014 for a murder he committed in 1989. Lawyers made a lot of money on that case. I assume the taxpayer ate the entire cost. The same thing will happen in this case. He is a cash cow for lawyers.
Yup X 2
Riverside County, CA
I figure that life in prison (a real prison) would be worse than death. But I condoned the death penalty thinking that it was cheaper than giving them room and board.
Wrong. The death penalty is much more expensive to the tax-payers once you figure in the cost of lawyers.
There should be a time limit on appeals. A year. If you can't provide sufficient proof that the perp isn't guilty in a year, it's over.
What kind of “star” was he. Don’t think I’ve ever heard of him, esp. if he was in the minors.
UPI story. Their writers can’t write coherently but not as Marxist, anti-Trump and anti-American as AP is.
#9. Screw the costs of trial and execution. The key point is, as I once write in a column for the Baltimore News American, “An executed murderer never murders again”.
Not citizens, police, jail staff, medical staff or fellow convicts.
Is he transitioning into a werewolf?
Cases with mental health issues by the defendant are often protracted because the defendant must be treated in order to become capable of assisting in their defense.
In this period (2010-2011) via the high school system in California...he was generally highly regarded. Some might say out of the whole state...he was probably ranked in the top ten players at that level.
So he gets drafted in 2011 (#38) and signed by the Marlins....then gets sent onto minors (1-million bonus). Over the next twelve months....the million gets spent on houses (plural), cars, drugs, and booze.
2012 in the minors went well for him. Then in 2013...he gets injured. Rehab time comes up, and his habits get worse. No one discusses his drug choices in this period (might be interesting to know what he was taking).
What few people realize in 2013 with him....he was paying around $6k a month on rent for some luxury house. Most AA players make nothing near that level.
So in 2014, his little world began to collapse. Team wasn’t willing to put up with the games. His route to the majors basically ended at that point).
That makes sense. Give them a chance to regain some level of self control.
Oddly, lack of mental capacity rarely works as a defense because part of being crazy is thinking that sudden violent urges and voices in your head are normal so you avoid talk therapy and medication.
How awful. May his father, uncle and installer rest in peace.
