The "Chief of the boat" is the most senior enlisted member of a submarine's crew.

The position is analogous to the Command Master/Senior/Chief on a surface ship.

Thank you for the explanation. Submariner family way back— from the O-boats days (at least not “the Holland”, heh!).

Made a comment about CWOs on the Fleet Submarines of WWII—

Your description of COB’s role and analogous rank on a surface ship is helpful for people understanding.

The COB runs the boat. Quite a Service, the Silent Service.
