She DARED to say she wanted to go to trial. So they upped the risk to multiple years in prison if she lost. The pressure and fear of being locked up for years (I think it was up to seven?) ramped up with every pre-trial. Eventually she blinked. I think most people would blink. Prosecutors get to brag that they got prison. She gets to be back with her family for the holidays. And that pesky right to a trial where the prosecution actually has to prove something is avoided.

IIRC, they filed the donations to the schools as tax-free on their taxes and that was fraudulent. Not jail worthy at all.
