I would prefer they use the time standard that gives me more daylight in the evening in the gloomy Iowa winters.
I believe it is why Indiana opts out of DST as well. They have more economic ties to the central time zone as well. A half-hour difference would be far less disruptive and help out large numbers of us in the western part of the eastern time zone.

By definition noon for any particular spot on earth is when the sun is at it’s highest when on your meridian. It’s called Local Apparent Noon (LAN)
Time zones were created so people near you are on the same time and each zone is one hour, comprising 24 hours to make one day.

I see your point in Iowa. But in the southern states, there is less of a difference in daylight in summer vs winter.
