I find nothing in the US Constitution about the federal government keeping us safe. Let anything making safety “THE FUNDAMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY...”
The DOJ is not a national control on state and local law enforcement. Their only power is not giving you grant money.
Might be nice for DOJ to show us how it’s done by cleaning up the thoroughly corrupt FBI.
