I played rugby for seven years at a high level in college and amateur club. My body paid the price: During my playing years, I suffered multiple broken fingers, a dislocated shoulder that required surgery, several concussions, and a broken fibula that ended my career. Since my retirement from rugby, I have undergone two shoulder surgeries, lower back surgery, and two joint replacements. Its a brutal sport, yet there is a level of congeniality among rivals that is not often seen in other sports.
