I’d love to have a choice available between a US and Chinese made item. I’d pay a slight premium for the US made one.

Aye, there's the rub. With the lower labor costs, subsidized materials costs, and manipulated currency exchanges, you would more likely have a 100% premium for a U.S. made commodity good, and most people wouldn't pay that much more.

True. I don’t know exactly where my cutoff point would be but for an equal quality item its difficult to pay double. What would your strategy be?
