Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute thread. Plane crashed 43 years ago today.

The day the music really died. Miracle that so many people survived. Drummer Artemis Pyle and piano player Billy Powell were able to walk out of the woods to seek help despite severe injuries. Artemus Pyle actually had ribs sticking out of his chest. It must have been pure shock that allowed him to walk out of the woods.

I was a sophomore in High School in Tacoma, WA when I heard this devastating news. Seemed like a bunch of good ol' boys.

Interesting the Freebird was not a favorite among honky tonk patrons. It was written as a 3 minute slow love song and the crowd would boo and heckle the band as they played it. The guitarists added a few seconds here and a few seconds there night after night to give Ronnie Van Zant a chance to rest his voice until it ultimately became a ten to fifteen minute song long song that concert-goers came to appreciate.

Call Me the Breeze

One of their few covers. Written by the late, great J.J. Cale.

Call Me the Breeze

Lynyrd Skynyrd
Call me the breeze
I keep blowin’ down the road
Well now, they call me the breeze
I keep blowin’ down the road
I ain’t got me nobody
I don’t carry me no load
Ain’t no change in the weather
Ain’t no changes in me
Well, there ain’t no change in the weather
Ain’t no changes in me
And I ain’t hidin’ from nobody
Nobody’s hidin’ from me
Oh, that’s the way its supposed to be
Well, I got that green light, baby
I got to keep movin’ on
Well, I got that green light, baby
I got to keep movin’ on
Well, I might go out to California
Might go down to Georgia, I don’t know
Well, I dig you Georgia peaches
Makes me feel right at home
Well now, I dig you Georgia peaches
Makes me feel right at home
But I don’t love me no one woman
So I can’t stay in Georgia long
Well now, they call me the breeze
I keep blowin’ down the road
Well now, they call me the breeze
I keep blowin’ down the road
I ain’t got me nobody
I don’t carry me no load
Ooh, Mr. Breeze

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Don’t ask me no questions
Well everytime that I come home nobody wants to let me be
It seems that all the friends I got just got to come interrogate me
Well, I appreciate your feelings and I don’t want to pass you by
But I don’t ask you about your business, don’t ask me about mine
Well it’s true I love the money and I love my brand new car
I like drinkin’ the best of whiskey and playing in a honky tonk bar
But when I come off the road, well I just got to have my time
‘cause I got to find a break in this action, else I’m gonna lose my mind
So, don’t ask me no questions
And I won’t tell you no lies
So, don’t ask me about my business
And I won’t tell you goodbye
That’s right
Well, what’s your favorite color and do you dig the brothers, is drivin’ me up a wall
And everytime I think I can sleep, some fool has got to call
Well don’t you think that when I come home, I just want a little peace of mind
If you want to talk about the business buddy, you’re just wastin’ time
So, don’t ask me no questions
And I won’t tell you no lies
So, don’t ask me about my business
And I won’t tell you goodbye
I said don’t ask no stupid questions and I won’t send you away
If you want to talk fishin, well I guess that’ll be ok

Several of the band members lived in my sister’s subdivision in Orange Park. We used to drive past their house all the time. My youngest sister is buried in the same cemetery with the deceased band members. Or she was until vandals attacked their graves and the family moved them to an undisclosed location.

John Mayer also does a nice cover of the song on Paradise Valley.
