“Freebird” was my High School class song. 1978.

“Red, White and Blue”. As patriotic as it gets. Always gives me goose bumps. And so appropriate for today.

I was a Florida Boy back then, and you weren’t a real Floridian unless you listened to Molly Hatchet.

I’ve been to Alabama, people ain’t a whole lot to see
Skynyrd says it’s a real sweet home but it ain’t nothing to me

RIP Danny Joe Brown, and the rest of you guys!

Man, I saw them with Ted Nugent in Chicago a few Weeks before the crash. Best concert I ever went too.

"..Guess I always liked the stuff that wasn't played on the radio much.."

Agreed. There's a lotta great music those guys put out that didn't get much airtime. Of the "more popular" stuff I really like The Ballad of Curtis Loew. Although I know it's an anthem, I never really cared much for Freebird at all. Just too damn long ala Green Grass and High Tides plus many others of the times.

I didn't attend the last show in GSO.
I've kicked myself for that procrastination ever since. d:^)

Old Skynyrd: “Cutis Lowe” and “Simple Man”. “Mississippi Kid” is underrated.

Later Skynyrd: “God and Guns” and “Red, White & Blue”

Awww... I was only 12 when their plane crashed, and I didn't really discover them for another two years. Freebird is great, but it was overplayed on the radio. I agree with you about the Ballad of Curtis Loew. Skynyrd put out so much great music.

Saw them play at the Hollywood Sportatorium in So. Fla. two nights before the crash.

From the time Sweet Home hit the radio they were on my turntable every day.

The core band of Ronnie, Gary, Allen and Leon were OK musicians and songwriters. IMO, it took people from outside the band to raise them to the next level. Ed King did it for them on Three albums and Steve Gaines did it for them on the last album.

Gary said so as much in later years, paraphrased: “Steve had a whole bunch of songs that we Skynyrdized and that became Street Survivors”.

Everytime I hear “Sweet Home Alabama”, I’m reminded of that epic scene in the movie Con Air.

Yes, I think Ronnie was figuring it out. How much progress he made with himself we don’t really know — many, once hooked, battle with their addiction(s) the rest of their lives. But, clearly “That Smell” is an incredibly powerful, effective song. As anti-substance abuse songs go, I think it is only exceeded by (ironically) Black Sabbath’s “Hand of Doom”, with its incredible “punch to the gut” conclusion.

Musically, both are genius, both go right at the listener, and I just love the tight, sparse, masterful use of “The Honkettes” in “That Smell”.

I had tickets to see them in the Garden when the crash occurred. Ted went forward, forget if any band filled in. Saw Skynard and Charlie Daniels at a Sean Hannity concert about 10 years ago. Quite a show.
