I've been thinking about the repair of the laptop, and some of the details didn't seem to make that much sense.
Then a couple of discrete facts fell into place, and I came up with a theory. The facts were: 1 - The repair guy could not ID Hunter as the guy who brought the laptop in. 2 - The laptop was water damaged.
So here is my theory. One or more of Hunter's partners-in-crime saw Hunter watching some of his illegal videos on the laptop, and suggested that the laptop contained too much incriminating crap on it and considering Hunter's legal problems, he should get rid of it.
So he went with a group to a lake in a boat or something and dropped several of his items into the water. Problem solved.
However, one of the low-level crooks with him at that time thought this was a great opportunity to end up on easy street through the time-honored tradition of blackmail. He marked the location where they dumped the laptops with his phone's GPS and came back later that day and retrieved the electronics. He then went to a out-of-the way repair shop and tried to get the laptops fixed so he could get his blackmail evidence. Since the laptop's serial number was associated with Hunter, he claimed to be Hunter.
Then I think it's possible that this crook ended up getting arrested and jailed for something else. This lowlife had nobody he trusted enough to try to retreive the laptop for him, and the contact information he gave to the repair guy went unanswered.
If this theory is true, how would it effect the legal status of the repair guy and the evidence?
I guess anything’s possible. Supposedly, the paperwork, including the contract with the 90-day period, turning it over for repair does have Hunter’s genuine signature on it.
Or, Occam’s Razor, Hunter is a stupid crackhead.
Hunter brought 3 laptops to the repair shop; here’s the complete timeline at link:

The owner, John Paul Mac Isaac, examined the three and determined that one was beyond recovery, one was okay and the data on the hard drive of the third could be recovered. Hunter signed the service ticket and John Paul Mac Isaac repaired the hard drive and down loaded the data. During this process he saw some disturbing images and a number of emails that concerned Ukraine, Burisma, China and other issues. With the work completed, Mr. Mac Isaac prepared an invoice, sent it to Hunter Biden and notified him that the computer was ready to be retrieved. Hunter did not respond. In the ensuing four months (May, June, July and August), Mr. Mac Isaac made repeated efforts to contact Hunter Biden. Biden never answered and never responded. More importantly, Biden stiffed John Paul Mac Issac–i.e., he did not pay the bill.....”

Again, if that theory was true how would Biden lawyer know it was in the shop? He called the shop to get it back.
That’s a pretty wild theory. I’m confident that’s not what happened.
Exactly the simplest answer is usually the correct answer, Hunter Biden is a screw up of the highest order, he was drunk or high on crack, dropped the laptops off to be fixed and didn’t think about it again...
With the cash he was bringing in, he probably went and bought a new laptop.
Because of his drug induced haze, he had no idea that someone would actually go thru the laptop and do something with the information...
He’s been a screw up his entire life, why would anyone think he’s changed now...

I think the better explanation is that, as in one of the pictures released, Hunter was soaking in a bathtub. He then let the laptop fall into the water.
We all can think up wild ideas, but the actual evidence points to something pretty simple. Hunter Biden, an erratic drug addict, left his laptops for repair and forgot about them, the same way he left a bunch of his stuff in a rental car once.

I believe Hunter is racked with guilt about his participation in the lie of his father’s public service and the crimes he was caught up in. He hates his father for the corruption he brought on the family but lacks the courage to go to the authorities and confess. “Losing” the laptop with all the evidence destroys his father’s dream of being President without him being disloyal to the clan. Shades of Fredo Corleone.
The guy is supposed to be legally blind. Unless you put out a lineup and had each person speak to him he probably couldn't identify him and if he could a good lawyer would probably get it tossed.

Hunter was doing a Weiner thing and spilled his drink on the keyboard.
Hunter gathered up his broken laptops and drove over to the repair shop....
