The News Cycle Is Crushing Seattle’s Vibrant Restaurant Scene

Tom Douglas still marvels at how quickly everything went south.

“We were having a really good start of February,” said the veteran Seattle chef and restaurateur.

He was set to sign a lease on a new space late in the month, which would have been his 14th restaurant overall. Mr. Douglas and his partners also own concession and catering businesses, a line of spices and sauces, and a cooking school.

...

The coronavirus outbreak was preceded by trouble at Boeing, Washington’s largest private employer, and followed by protests for racial justice and police reform that culminated with the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone,” an area of a Seattle neighborhood taken over by protesters following conflicts with law enforcement in June.

“People ask, ‘Why don’t you take the boards off the windows?’” said Jean Nakayama, the owner of Maneki, Seattle’s oldest Japanese restaurant. Her response: “Let’s wait until after the election to see what happens.”

In case the election goes south the NYT is publishing civil war dining tips for city slickers: Chinese will make you feel hungry again in 2 hours. Fresh Mexican is ok with spicy thot sauce. For the well-to-do: Italian thigh steak with a side of couch potato and some white whine.

So it’s the NYT’s fault?

They need to be made to pay then.

I bet nearly every single person Mr. Douglas employs is a hard lefty and votes accordingly. The city and its residents are responsible for their own problems.

Big Tech is now buying massive square footage in NY city. They help create this mess, everyone leaves and then they get bargains on leasing.

Protesters don’t take over neighborhoods, rioters take over neighborhood. These people are rioters.

A bunch of woke restuarant owners having to live in a woke city.

Why feel sorry for them?

“The chef’s cooking celebrates the food of Black Americans and the African diaspora. While his restaurants are still only open for takeout and delivery (a third, Lucinda Grain Bar, is temporarily closed), he said he’s committed to changing the salary structure at his restaurants, to make the pay more equal for all of his employees, in spite of the foreboding economics.”

I read on SmartNews that residential rents in Nancy Pelosi’s California city have fallen about 30%.

Can’t wait to go to the “sack of rice, flies, starving children and malaria” cafe.

At least in Dodge City, you could get a good steak.

In NYC, you could get a free steak knife in the abdomen.

As someone who has dabbled in the culinary field, Tom Douglas, despite his left-leaning politics, is a damn good chef. He’s considered ‘the father of Northwest cuisine’, and he’s a James Beard Award recipient.

Say what you want about the guy’s person, but the man can COOK.

Like that guy some years back who paid everyone a living wage of $72,000 a year, and promptly went broke.

It's a shame about the restaurant industry. Before the Chinese pandemic, I would eat out 3-4 nights a week on average and my wife had it in the budget as a $1,200/mo line item.

When the "pandemic" hit, I would have been more than happy to have continued but the shut-downs gave me no choice but to cook more at home. At first, I tried to support the local restaurants by doing take-out but was very disappointed when I got the food home. It never came close to the quality you got when you sat down at the restaurant. Even now, with restaurants in my area allowed to have outdoor dining and "25% indoor" capacity, I've had disappointing experiences. The restaurants are short-staffed (understandable as they need to cut expenses to their lower revenues) so again, the quality of the food is not up to par and the limited waitstaff are typically trying to wait on double the amount of tables spread out over a larger dining area.

The last straw for me was about two months ago when I went to a favorite pub and the poor waitress was waiting on about 15 tables while also having to go behind the bar and fix drinks because the restaurant couldn't afford a full-time bartender. It took us over a half hour just to get our drink order in and another hour before our food finally came. The waitress apologized profusely and was obviously super-stressed out. We gave her a big tip but never went back. It's a shame what the governors have done to their economies in order to "hurt Trump."

The Missus and I have to go to the Seattle area next month and will have a few hours between meetings. A year ago, we probably would have hit a couple of tourist spots. Not now. Fly to SeaTac, get in rental car, and head for hotel well out of the city area, do business, and fly home.
