Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) on Friday slammed President Trump for refusing to denounce QAnon, a group that has spread false information on social media about COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter movement and which the FBI warns is a domestic terror threat.
The presidents unwillingness to denounce an absurd and dangerous conspiracy theory last night continues an alarming pattern: politicians and parties refuse to forcefully and convincingly repudiate groups like antifa, white supremacists and conspiracy peddlers, Romney said in a statement tweeted Friday afternoon.
Similarly troubling is their silence regarding anti-vaxxers, militias and anarchists, he added. Rather than expel the rabid fringes and the extremes, they have coddled or adopted them, eagerly trading their principles for the hope of electoral victories.
Trump pointedly declined to criticize QAnon during a nationally-televised town hall Thursday evening when Savannah Guthrie of NBC News asked him to debunk a conspiracy theory about Satan-worshiping politicians and celebrities being part of a global sex abuse conspiracy.
I know nothing about it. I do know they are very much against pedophilia. They fight it very hard, but I know nothing about it, Trump replied.
It was the second time in less than a month that the president has refused to condemn a fringe group viewed as sympathetic to his cause.
During his debate with Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden on Sept. 29, Trump refused to condemn white supremacist groups when pressed by moderator Chris Wallace.
Trump referenced one such group, the Proud Boys, by name and said: Stand back and stand by. But Ill tell you what, Ill tell you what, somebodys got to do something about antifa and the left, because this is not a right-wing problem.
Trumps refusal to condemn the Proud Boys and similar groups prompted an immediate backlash from Republicans on Capitol Hill.
The next day Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told reporters: It was unacceptable not to condemn white supremacists, associating himself with the remarks of Sen. Tim Scott (S.C.), the only African American in the Senate GOP conference, who called on Trump to correct his statement.
Romney on Tuesday criticized Trump and Democrats for contributing to what he called a hate-filled morass.
I have stayed quiet with the approach of the election, Romney said in another statement posted on Twitter. "But Im troubled by our politics, as it has moved away from spirited debate to a vile, vituperative, hate-filled morass that is unbecoming of any free nationlet alone the birthplace of modern democracy."
Romney warned that rabid attacks back and forth between Trump and Democratic leaders such as Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) kindle the conspiracy mongers and the haters who take the small and predictable step from intemperate word to dangerous action.
He cited Trump calling Bidens running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), a monster and Pelosis tearing up of Trumps State of the Union speech on national television in February.
Mittens must either like him some young children...
Or, he’s got a Biden Hunter cash problem just like Sleepy Joe...
I betcha he even drinks adrenochrome...

This man is neck deep in deep state corruption no doubt.
And how do you like that utter moron Savannah Guthrie INSISTING Trump must know about Qanon?? What the hell was that? So in other words he is suppose to know about every stupid internet conspiracy theory in existence? My God what an extremely annoying woman, and I give Trump tremendous credit for withstand that and not walking out and allowing her to destroy herself which she in fact did. If you look at the comments on her Facebook page, 100% of them are negative against her.
What a filthy animal.
Kolub or Bust!
The same Romney who gave his support to a Marxist Terrorist Organization?
Just shut up and vote for ACB, Mitt!
Can we isolate him to Utah with no media or Internet connections.
They truly believe that they are in a class above most others, and are here on Earth to guide the rest of us. Nothing could be further from the truth, but this is truly what they believe - irrespective of what lies they tell themselves and others.
There is NOTHING Trump has done that is in any way inconsistent with nominal Republican and conservative values and beliefs - save his anti-globalism work to preserve America and protect US workers. What exactly is it about Trump that they oppose - other than what I wrote about above?
Savanah Banshee: “Mr. Trump, you say the only thing you know about QANON is that they are anti-pedo. Why do you refuse to denounce these anti-LGBTP bigots?”
Well, yes, we surely do.
But...
The hysterical reaction among the Davoisie here, and in Europe, is happening for a reason, and, until I know what that reason is, I'm keeping an open mind.
And, pro tip - never, never, NEVER give in to someone's demand that you "denounce" something or someone.
It's a sign of submission to superior force or superior intellect. That's why they want to make you do it.
Tell you what, Romney,
Just what is your description and understanding of this Qanon, so we know exactly what you are asking about?
It sure sounds like Mittens wants to shut down any group of ppl who have beliefs out of the mainstream. Isnt that the antithesis of what America stands for?
"Like spice, the money from Ukraine to Bain and Congress and our sons must flow."
This POS refuses to attack Biden. Hes an enemy of the Republican Party
This is really going to hurt Trump with the Romney wing of the Party/s
If he wanted to be President, he could’ve won. He was the designated loser. He only goes “nuclear” against his Conservative opponents.
QAnon bad.
Magic underwear good.
Alexander Bolton is a clown.
Apparently he would find the Utah part of that to be a significant punishment...
