I sent this comment to Sen's Warner and Kaine.
Despite the interesting theories of Sen. Coons and others, Judge Barrett is highly qualified to serve on the Supreme Court. Her appointment was constitutionally correct and in accordance with precedent. She should be confirmed in the same spirit of comity and bipartisanship as Justices Kagan and Sotamayor.
I received the following unasked for response from Warner:
Sen. Mark Warner [donotreply@warner.senate.gov]
Thank you for contacting me regarding the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to be an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
This week, the Senate Judiciary Committee is holding hearings to consider Judge Barretts nomination to the Court. You may be assured that I am following the hearing closely. There is so much on the line with this Supreme Court vacancy. Everything, from health care to reproductive rights to voting rights, hangs in the balance. The American people have a right to have their voices heard before the confirmation of a new justice.
The Senate should not consider a Supreme Court nomination before Inauguration Day.
This is not a question of judicial qualifications or temperament of the nominee this is about following the standard established by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in the last presidential election year.
After the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in February 2016, President Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court. Leader McConnell refused over my own strong objections to consider Judge Garlands nomination 10 months prior to the presidential election. This established a new precedent which Senate leadership should adhere to now. We cant have one set of rules for Democratic presidents, and a different set of rules for Republican presidents.
I will continue to urge my colleagues in the Senate to wait and listen to the American people prior to considering the nominee. I appreciate your comments regarding this important matter, and I hope that you will continue to contact me about issues that are important to you.
Sincerely, MARK R. WARNER United States Senator
I guess, in a respect, that the clown Warner is saying
‘Paybacks are hell’.
You derailed us, we will derail you.
Shame he didn’t print etc all the NEGATIVE responses to the BO appt sidetracking when the circumstances were a tad different.
The old ‘depends whose ox is being gored’ way of thinking is stronger than ever.
Yeah, well the election was up for grabs as obama was not going to be re-elected.
Vote already.
I think that’s a hard no.
Reproductive right... um knock off the double speak Warner, say it loud and proud Warner.... it’s abortion.
