How? Every pol runs his own race and raises his own money. Primaries are open to any candidate who wants to run as a Republican. That’s a feature, not a bug. A strong party system would have strangled Trump’s presidential bid in the cradle.

As I recall, they tried. Didn’t work. They sold out to Hilliary and it backfired.

As a Harvard and Yale grad, he’ll do much better. The problem is that his degrees have made him arrogant and therefore unguarded in what he says. He might rise further as a politician, but it won’t be as a Republican.

A strong party system means Trump would not have been able to run for the nomination at all. Candidates would have been selected by party honchos in smoke-filled rooms. Prior to 20th century reforms, the popular vote in each state played no part in the nominating process. In Europe, that’s still how the process works - party leaders decide who gets to run:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primary_election#United_States
[The United States is one of the few countries to select candidates through popular vote in a primary election system;[10] most countries rely on party leaders or paid up party members to select candidates, as was previously the case in the U.S.[]

Did you never hear about national parties giving money to candidates of the same party? Yeah, they raise a lot of their own money, but a tremendous amount is doled out by the national parties...to those who toe the line. Regrettably, Sasse’s seat is important, so he cannot be cut off right now...but he should have to pay a price for this later. When you join a party, that has to mean something in terms of loyalty - or at least shutting the FU 3 weeks before an election.
