As Commander in Chief, I send my sincere gratitude to our Nations sailors on the 245th birthday of the United States Navy. Today, we celebrate the Navys unmatched position as the worlds preeminent naval power, and I encourage all Americans to reflect on the heroism of our patriotic sailors and the countless sacrifices they have made for our country throughout our history.
In 1775, the Continental Congress formally established the Continental Navy. Since its inception, the Navy has grown from two armed vessels into the most effective seafaring force in the history of the world. From the earliest days of our Nation and throughout the many conflicts we have faced, the United States Navy has valiantly protected our homeland, brought justice to our enemies, and ensured that the passageways of the seas remain open and accessible to American commerce.
Over the last year, we have added state-of-the-art warships to our fleet, revitalized our personnel and assets to meet current threats, and deployed our Navys mighty power to help meet todays challenges. In March, I sent two Navy Mercy-class hospital ships, the USNS Mercy and USNS Comfort, to the front lines of our battle with the coronavirus. The Navys medical teams on board displayed immense bravery in the face of this invisible enemy, and I commend them for their service and dedication. Their resolve and willingness to rapidly adapt to the challenges facing the American people and our homeland are testaments to all of our Nations sailors, who are forged by the sea and serve with honor, courage, and commitment every day.
Today, I wish a happy birthday to our Navy and join a grateful Nation in thanking every Sailorpast and presentfor their hard work, sacrifice, and patriotism. May God bless you and keep watch over those in peril on the sea, and may God bless the United States of America.
A global force for good.
The Navy is our first line of defense...one glance at a globe with the two largest oceans in the world in between us and any potential enemy is why.
100%
Amen.... but Never Again Volunteer Yourself
Ha, indeed. Look what happened to Jonah the Navi...
He didn't want to be drafted, so he signed up for a Med cruise headed the other way. Then when that didn't work because he packed too many negative waves, he "jumped ship" and ended up as the famous representative Hebrew soul on its mission.
Who can forget that guy? He must have unwittingly booked a Celebrity Cruise. ;)
Besides, you know how sailors are famous for their salty language...
Some months ago I found myself wandering into an etymology page where I came upon the goddess of sailors, this gal:
Brizo /ˈbraɪzoʊ/ (Greek: Βριζώ; derived from Ancient Greek word βρίζω meaning "to slumber") is an ancient Greek goddess who was known as the protector of mariners, sailors, and fishermen.[1] She was worshipped primarily by the women of Delos, who set out food offerings in small boats. Brizo was also known as a prophet specializing in the interpretation of dreams.[2]
I had never heard of her, so I started checking up on the Greek word. I simply pasted the name into wiktionary, and βρίζω landed me HERE.
Hilarious. You just can't make this stuff up.
Suddenly I saw these verses in an whole new light:
Jonah 1
4. But the Lord sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship seemed likely to break up:
5. Then the sailors were afraid, and cried each one to his own god, and they threw the wares that were in the ship to the sea, to lighten it for them; But Jonah had gone down into the interior of the ship; and had lain down, and was fast asleep:
I hope you enjoyed that little cruise.
Join the navi, see the world! Brizo.. who knew? Looks like she goes by various code names such as #!&*#! or @*^$!, or whatever each sailor calls her on any given occasion, which could explain why she had sailed right on by.
:)
