What ever company the shooter worked for is on the hook as is the media company who hired him.

You can not use lethal force to defend against non lethal and a non life threatening encounter.

The mace did not have the ability to kill the shooter and no other weapons were in evidence.

I don't know if Pinkerton is on the hook for this or not. Dolloff was not registered with the city of Denver to be a security guard. If he was acting as a security guard he broke the law regardless if he worked for Pinkerton.

But back to the company. Whenever I have had to hire security for a family event, I contacted a company, signed a contract, and paid the company. The company assigned the guards, and the company paid the guards. I did not get to choose who came to the event. If the news station chose Dolloff without contracting with Pinkerton, then Pinkerton can rightfully claim they never authorized him to act in the capacity of a guard employed by Pinkerton in that event. He was on his own.
