Mexicos president published an open letter to Pope Francis Saturday calling on the Roman Catholic Church to apologize for abuses of indigenous peoples during the conquest of Mexico in the 1500s.
In the letter, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador also asks the pope to lend Mexico ancient pre-Hispanic Mexican or colonial-era documents.
The Catholic Church, the Spanish monarchy and the Mexican government should make a public apology for the offensive atrocities that Indigenous people suffered, the letter states.
López Obrador asked the pope to make a statement in favor of Miguel Hidalgo, Mexicos 19th-century independence leader who was once believed to have been excommunicated by the church for his involvement in the uprising.

Will the Mexican president apologize for the horrendous crimes of the Aztecs and their massive human sacrifices of conquered peoples?
Cortez did humanity a favor.
Uh ... Obrador looks about as indigenous as I do. Why doesn’t he apologize for his own existence?
What about all the massacres of indigenous people the Mexican government has committed since independence from Spain?
Will the Mexican president apologize for the horrendous crimes of the Aztecs and their massive human sacrifices of conquered peoples?

Was going to say exactly that.
From Canaan to Carthage to Central America, God hates human sacrificers.
That is a most excellent comment. But unfortunately factual history can no longer be mentioned.
The Aztecs as they really were:
The Aztecs as we are supposed to see them today:
“From Canaan to Carthage to Central America, God hates human sacrificers.”
To the abortuary down the street.
Will the Mexican president apologize for decades of his nation and it’s people violating Americas southern border and committing countless crimes against the American people?
Will the Mexican government reimburse the American taxpayer for the billions of dollars Americans have had to spend in all manner of aid and social welfare benefits programs for these invaders and law breakers?
Obrador comes face to face all over Mexico with statues of Bartolome de las Casas. A Spanish born Bishop in Mexico. He was first to complain about Maltreatment of indigenous in c.14 to 1500. He asked Pope for, and got, a declaration stating the full humanity of the indigenous and the command to treat them in keeping with same.
Obrador kowtowing to the victims in Mexico and her of revisionist history.
Good point.
Followed by reparations, of course.
Couldn’t happen to a more deserving Marxist pope.
Has he demanded an apology from the SPANISH government yet???
He did last year, and they refused.
Why? He’s a white guy. His ancestors are the Conquistadors, not the Aztecs.
The Aztecs as they really were:
The ‘official’ view is that any cannibalism practiced was purely ritualistic, but the sheer number of dead bodies they had to deal with pretty much belies that. Burial was out of the question, Tenochtitlan was a ‘floating city’ on a shallow lake. Cremation? Well, if roasting an arm or leg counts as cremation, I suppose that might work.
He also seeks revocation of the excommunication of Hidalgo. That’s more interesting. Hidalgo had a legitimate beef: Napoleon didn’t want the locals growing crops like olives, which the Mexican soil was very well suited for, but which would compete directly with produce of continental France/Spain. But he was a priest, and priests leading bloody insurrections, no matter what their grievance, just shouldn’t be a thing. So instead of getting his flock well-fed, he got them led into battles in which they were slaughtered by the tens of thousands.
If they really feel this way then Mexico must discover and turnover all control to tribal chiefs.
Why would the church apologize for civilizing the wretched pre-Columbian savages?
