CAS will strengthen its research on supercomputing systems and key materials in the next 10 years to help solve critical problems in these areas. But this sounds like a joke, as CAS is surrounded by scandals, driven by politics, and controlled by the Chinese regime.

Back in the '80s, Japan, then riding very high on its well-earned successes in automobiles and electronics, made a decision to compete with IBM and Cray etc. in supercomputing. I recall the supercomputing program was a government project, and they had a big one in mind. As they were working on the big project, the technology advanced, and the U.S. giants were able to leapfrog what the Japanese were working on even before it was available. Timing means a lot, and agile development does too.

The Japanese did well in laptop computers (Toshiba, NEC) and laser printer engines (Canon laser engines were used in early HP and Apple laser printers, and most others). They never did so well in desktop computers (despite efforts from Epson and Toshiba, and a later push by Sony) or supercomputers. The supercomputer industry was NOT helped by the government (despite having some serious IT technology with companies like Fujitsu).

Why does China need its own Research & Development?

They are doing a brilliant job of stealing ours.

They have a couple thousand graduate students enrolled in America's elite STEM universities, and a couple thousand more MS and PHD graduates working as H-1Bs, and dozens of “joint research” projects between USA and Chinese universities.

And it is not just the USA.

France supervised the the construction of the infamous Wuhan Lab, the same Lab that Dr. Fauci gave $7.5 million of American money to perform corona virus “gain of function” research.

Complete insanity - and undisguised greed by America's elite universities.
