35 small earthquakes hit near the Salton Sea within 40 minutes
Nbc ^ | 09/30/2020

The swarm happening now south of the Salton Sea, near Westmoreland is over 30 km south of the end of the San Andreas. It is in the Brawley seismic zone, a common source of swarms. So far largest is M4.4. Too far from the San Andreas to change the probability of a quake on it.

Re: the 1979 6.4 quake:

“The Imperial Valley is surrounded by a number of interconnected fault systems and is vulnerable to both moderate and strong earthquakes as well as earthquake swarms.

“Four of the region’s known strike-slip faults and one additional newly discovered normal fault all broke the surface during the earthquake.

“The earthquake was caused by rupture along parts of the Imperial Fault, the Brawley fault zone and the Rico Fault, a previously unknown normal fault near Holtville, though slip was also observed on the Superstition Hills Fault and the San Andreas Fault.”

It’s experimental.

We’ll be glad to take it here in California! With its name, it should belong to us!

Further south and much more focused than the August swarm, maybe the Imperial fault is going to have a go?

So long as the break occurs west of FreeRepublic headquarters. (The servers might have to be replaced - I don’t know where the CoLo is.)

That ain’t good - the San Andreas fault in that region has been locked for hundreds of years. They really fear that a release in the Salton Sea/northern Mexico area could trigger the fault all the way up. There is HUGE stress built up on it in the desert east of San Diego.

Clear explanation, in-line with what we’ve expected.
1680 - 2020 = 340 years.

Well past their 200 year expected interval. Well, an earthquake down there is just one more reason for California to delay getting their mail-in ballots counted, right?

I wondered what those random low-level thuds were. Wasn’t there a pacific plate related shift about a week ago? 4.7 or so? Elsinore was hit with a 3.2 about that time.

I think we should blame Sam Andreas, that's the guy whose fault it is.
