That was because most would die in infancy, then more in the teen years, and maybe one or two reach old age.

"Having more than 10 was not uncommon in the 19 century." My wife was the 3rd youngest of ten (10)... Her mother was the the youngest of 10... Her father was from a brood of nine... Her mother died at age 98 and her father died 2-days short of 100...
The story is similar on my side of the family... My Dad was one of 7 children and Mom was one of 8 children...
