There is a bike path between Maple Valley and Renton, WA along the Cedar River. There are bald eagle nests along the route. My wife and I were riding one of tandem bicycles on a dowhill section of the path doing around 25mph. An eagle came swooping down on us and grabbed the light mounted to the top of my bicycle helmet with its tallons. At that speed an Eagle can develop a surprising amount of lift. If it were not for my chin strap he would have gotten away with my entire helmet. My wife who was on the rear seat said its wing span was close to 6 ft. It let go after the brief attempt and flew off.

“this took place in Warilla, New South Wales, Australia.”
In Australia, even the magpies will kill you.

Australia, to be expected. The bird was probably venomous too.

Australian magpies are a different species from magpies in the rest of the world. The kid might have inadvertently approached the magpie’s nest—or maybe the bird was just being friendly.

It said it occurred near the end of September in Australia. It could have been that the poor kid accidentally rode just a little too close to the magpie's nest. The bird could have throught he was defending his nest (eggs or babies) from a predator.

Is magpie Australian for blue jay? Blue jays are the craziest birds I’ve seen in protecting their nests. The baby birds were extra comfortable in a nest lined with cat fur from any of the kitties who got too close.

I hope the magpie wore a helmet.

Im glad his daddy taught him to not give in to the bird.

The magpie in my neighborhood all ride Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
And their portable CD players keep blasting “Leader of the Pack” over and over and over.
Ya don’t want to mess with them at all.

Ah, springtime in the Antipodes and the birds are defending! Persistent buggers they are!
I’ve been similarly dive-bombed here in the US years back. I ran but someone told me it was a big crow. To me it was BIGLY BIG! Have never gone down that way again!
