That’s pretty much what the polygraph operator did when he tested David Westerfield, the neighbor who quickly became the suspect in the disappearance of Danielle van Dam, in San Diego in 2002.
He first read to Westerfield the questions he said he was going to ask, and said these were exactly the way they would be on the test. But then, when he actually asked them, they were slightly different. This is a technique which can produce false results, thereby making it appear that he had failed the test. Which is what the polygraph operator wanted, as he had already decided Westerfield was guilty. And Westefield’s “failure” of the test is why he so soon became the only suspect.
